Halloween marks the end of the summer harvest and marks the beginning of the coldest 6 months of the year. Nature lets go of what she no longer needs in preparation for hibernation. The winter frost encroaches, bringing with it death and decay as life fades and withers.
The veil between the material world and the afterlife is at its most transparent on this night of All Hallows’ Eve. No one can be quite sure where the physical world ends and the supernatural begins.
If you’re alive on Halloween (and we pray that you will be), the spirits of the dead are most readily mingling with you, the living, on that night. This is a time for remembering the dead because… can you forget them anyway?
For hundreds of years, small round sweet cakes called “souls” were given out to the children and the poor, who went door-to-door to sing or say prayers for the souls of the givers and their friends. Ritual begging for cakes door-to-door like this was called “souling” and is otherwise known as trick-or-treating today.
Soul cakes and glasses of wine were also set out on All Hallows’ Eve as offerings for the dead.
