Parents' Day is celebrated in America on the 4th Sunday of July and internationally on June 1st. This holiday gives us all an extra opportunity to be grateful for our parents.
Parent-child relationships can be hum… complicated sometimes! Every family has its own unique dynamics. Maybe the parents you recognize are your biological parents or not. Perhaps you have adopted parents, godparents, parents-in-law or stepparents which are relationships carrying special significance.
Having these extra parents can result in you caring for more than 2 people in your life as parents. If your parents have passed away you may have no parental figure left in your life. Relationships with your parents can even be strained with baggage and complications over the years, even in memory following their passing.
In any case, your parents raised and supported you with good intentions the best way that they could. Striving to forgive your parents for any shortcomings and celebrate them in their achievements is part of growing into a new level of confidence and comfort.
Parents’ Day celebrates children’s positive recognition of their parents. Besides the immense joy that children bring their parents, sacrifice and challenges are also experienced when raising children. So we sympathize with parents since we are all a child of a parent!
Parents’ Day is an opportunity to remember the bond between parent and child. Let us recognize our parents who created our unique existence on Earth, which is part of the miracle of life. The people we recognize as our parents cared for, taught and nurtured us as children.
Besides being thankful, we can express our gratitude.
Here are some ideas to celebrate your relationship on Parents' Day!
Reserve an evening to spend together to look over old videos, slides and photos. Not only are you spending quality time with your parent but this can trigger some storytelling and memories that may not otherwise be discussed. You can delve into your ancestry and genealogy, which may even help you understand why your parents are the way they are!
Making copies of such videos, slides and photos for your family members can ensure that your family memories are kept safe in different hands to pass down to your children and other relatives.
When we were young my grandmother used to take us grandkids white water rafting on the New River in West Virginia! My parents used to take us camping when my sisters and I were younger. As an adult I took my parents canoeing and even scuba diving one time!
Think to get outdoors to enjoy some quality time with your parent (or your grandparent!) hiking, camping, surfing, biking, boating or picnicking. Breaking free of routines can help break down walls and help you see those you love in a new light! These are lasting memories you can keep as the best gift ever.
